An accurate count?

I believe the snapshot of public golf (”These Links Are Your Links,” May) is misleading. Some of the statistics fail to make the distinction between courses owned by a public entity and daily fee courses run by private companies purely for profit. It is an important distinction. In South Carolina, there are only a handful of municipal courses — nowhere near the 262 [public courses] cited. Every time anyone proposes building a municipal course, course owners squeal like pigs about unfair public-sector competition. Robert Bacon, Charleston, S.C.
